ESL classrooms in Pakistan, in general, focus on teaching the macro-skills to the students along with grammar whereas teaching of vocabulary isn’t given due attention. The most common mode of teaching vocabulary is to have the learners memorize long lists of words and their meanings. Unfortunately, the method of trying to learn ‘words-meanings’ in isolation turns out to be rather unproductive and inefficient.
In this session, participants will be engaged in the following fun-filled vocabulary building activities:
- Learning stems, prefixes and suffixes and how these are combined to form different words
- learning different parts of speech for the same word
- Cross-word and other word puzzles
- Head-to-tail and bingo
- Words beginning with particular sounds; words ending with particular sounds
- make many words from a given word
- Mime and graphic language
